Monte Toboggan Ride Guide
Thrill Ride Downhill: Experience the Monte Toboggan! Guide
Prepare for an exhilarating and unforgettable experience with the Monte Toboggan ride! This unique mode of transportation, dating back to the 19th century, involves being pushed down the steep streets of Monte in a wicker basket sled by two traditionally dressed carreiros (sled drivers). It's a thrilling and slightly quirky way to descend from Monte back towards Funchal. The Monte Toboggan ride originated in the mid-19th century as a practical way for residents of Monte to quickly travel downhill to Funchal. Before the advent of modern transportation, this was a much faster alternative to walking. Over time, it evolved into a popular tourist attraction, offering a glimpse into Madeira's history and a healthy dose of adrenaline. The carreiros, with their distinctive straw hats and rubber-soled boots, are an integral part of the experience. The main activity is, of course, the toboggan ride itself! After purchasing your ticket, you'll be seated in the wicker basket and gently pushed off by the carreiros. They use their rubber-soled boots to steer and brake as you hurtle down the winding streets. The ride covers approximately 2 kilometers and offers stunning views of Funchal. While the ride itself doesn't involve specific food, you can find local restaurants and cafes near the starting and ending points offering traditional Madeiran snacks and drinks.

To reach the starting point of the Monte Toboggan ride, take the Funchal Cable Car to Monte. The toboggan departure point is a short walk from the cable car station. After the ride, you'll be a few kilometers outside of Funchal. You can take a taxi or bus back to the city center.
